Shortly after the annexation of Texas in March 1845, Mexico severed relation with the United States.  Disputes over the border and the idea of Manifest Destiny would lead to military confrontation.  With the Treaty of Guadalupe Hildalgo in 1848, Mexico ceded to the United States the territories that now include the states of New Mexico, Utah, Arizona, Nevada, California, Texas and Western Colorado.
