Homeschool Culinary Arts - Ages 13 and up

This 8-week course will provide an opportunity for students to develop basic food preparation skills and kitchen safety. Class and labwork experiences emphasize nutrition as students examine preparation principles and techniques of a variety of foods. Students should bring containers to take leftovers home. Lessons include:
  • Food safety and sanitation: Students learn how to prevent cross-contamination and spoilage that can lead to illness or food poisoning.
  • Knife skills: Students learn how to use a sharp knife and other tools safely and efficiently.
  • Mise en place: Students learn how to prepare the kitchen, food, and equipment.
  • Cooking methods: Students learn a variety of cooking methods, including moist and dry heat.
  • Recipes: Students learn how to read recipes, use abbreviations and equivalent measurements, and increase or decrease a recipe.
  • Nutrition: Students learn basic nutrition concepts.
  • Presentation: Students learn how to present and serve food.
Please note this is not a dual enrollment credit class, it is a Community Education class.
