US Wars Series: Spanish American War (1898)

The Spanish American War ended Spain's colonial empire in the Western Hemisphere and secured the position of the United States as a Pacific power.  The exploitation and sinking of the battleship Maine in Havana harbor provided the flash point for military intervention by the United States.  At the conclusion of the ten week war, Spain renounced all rights to Cuba and ceded Puerto Rico and Guam to the United States.  Plus giving up its possession in the West Indies, the Philippine Islands were sold for 20 million dollars.
