The Union turns it economic might in its favor.  Hyperinflation and other hardships grip both sides, but are especially felt in the South.  The Emancipation Proclamation sets ending slavery as Lincoln's aim, but leads to violent draft riots in New York and other cities.  The war introduces the new game of baseball to other parts of the country.  Prisoners suffer at Andersonville.  The South's long-awaited intervention by Great Britainon its behalf never materializes.  Clara Barton's efforts help reform battlefield medicine.
