Grapes of Wrath

Winner of the 1990 Tony Award for Best Play, The Grapes of Wrath tells the story of the Joad family shattered by the depths of the Great Depression of the 1930s. They and millions of Americans struggled to survive the national crisis. Steinbeck’s message is that of universal oneness, a concept very alien in today’s culture. One of the plays’ characters, Casy, an ex-priest is quoted:  “I been thinkin’ maybe all men got one big soul everybody’s a part of…”  The story is told with music of the Depression’s famous folk artist, Woody Guthrie, vivid and contrasting lighting, and an ensemble dramatizing the movement of hundreds of thousands west to find a better life in California.  Dinner will be served before the show in the College Center Rotunda.
