CourseGraphic More Southern states secede as Lincoln calls up the militia.  Desires of a quick and decisive Union victory are dashed a Bull Run.  Early successes suggest that the Confederacy has the upper hand in strategic and political leadership.  The North's industrial might gives it an advantage.  The fighting becomes bloody in the Chesapeake.  The Union victories at Vicksburg and Gettysburg turns the tide in the Union's favor.  Grant assumes overall command in the North and begins to strategically consolidate Union victories.
