Creating a barrier from invasion has always been important to communities since the Neolithic. Some, like the ancient Egyptians, benefitted from natural boundaries. Others, such as the Chinese, erected artificial barriers, i.e., the Great Wall, with enormous effort. These, as well as the Romans, will be examined to gain some insights as to their effectiveness. We might gain some new perspectives on our attempts to manage our borders.
