Most of the Germanic peoples that invaded the Roman Empire were subsequently conquered and faded from history. A confederation of Germanic peoples known as the Franks grew stronger and absorbed weaker groups after the collapse of the Roman Empire. We will explore the development of the Franks from a confederation on the east bank of the Rhine to their height under Charlemagne and the Carolingian Renaissance. We will also gain some understanding as to how this influenced Medieval and modern Europe.
